In 1819, exactly one day before Congress admitted Alabama to the Union as a state, the territorial legislature incorporated the town of Tuscaloosa. Now, with a growing population of more than 89,000, Tuscaloosa and the surrounding area has continued to thrive. The nearby Mercedes Benz Automotive Plant and Visitors Center, constructed a dozen years ago, has created great industrial interest in the area.
Needless to say, this old Southern town has plenty of modern day activities to enjoy. Located along the banks of the Black Warrior River in west central Alabama, Tuscaloosa is a playground for all forms of outdoor life from boating and hiking to fishing and golf. The area is deep in arts, history and culture.
And, as if boasting 12 national championships wasn’t enough for the University of Alabama, located in the heart of Tuscaloosa, the SEC college football team claimed their 13th national title early 2010 under the direction of Head Coach Nick Saban. So, for the sports enthusiasts, football in this city is a must.
